How To Achieve Team Success

How To Achieve Team Success

The difference between success and failure can be very subtle. Whatever your endeavor, it requires some sort of team work. Every team requires leadership and vision. Being a good leader doesn’t mean “my way or the highway.” That’s the kind of leader that people won’t willingly follow … and who can blame them! A good leader is a humble “member” of the team … a “participant!”

If you want to be a good leader / mentor, then lead by example. Be the kind of leader that’s a motivator. Roll up your sleeves, dive in and give your team some skin in the game. Stand with them and watch them come to life!

Your reward … employee retention! BOOM!!

Would You Work for a Woman?

Female Bosses(4)

As an executive recruiter, I can honestly tell you that right or wrong, some of the toughest assignments I work on for clients are positions that report to women. Statistically speaking, the majority of workers still do not want to report to women. Even more distressing is that women prefer male bosses more than men do.  The reality is that it’s still an issue in the workplace and makes my job difficult at times.

I’ve linked two articles below on this provocative subject. One article is statistically based and the other is from the author’s personal perspective and experience. What I’ve learned is that there seem to be a handful of mistakes women bosses tend to make more than men. Although men make these mistakes as well, the margin for women appears to be much greater. The following five points are further outlined in one of the articles I’ve liked below.

Female Bosses(3)

Emotional distances (Too nurturing or ice queen)

Wanting everyone to feel good (Resulting in entitlement culture)
Hiring (Women tend to minimize rather than eliminate mistakes)
Reluctance to admit mistakes (Fear of losing trust)
Finding a mentor (Seek and find as many as possible)

Obviously, there are many more factors that contribute to this troublesome phenomenon in the workplace, such as cultural and societal traditions, as well as perceptions. We still have some work to do to overcome some of those long-time norms.  But, as noted in the statistical article linked below, progress is being made. Both men and women can learn a lot from these two articles, whether they are in management or not. Understanding the underlying reasons for the “male boss preference” is a good start to developing a great relationship with your female boss that’s based on respect and trust. And you never know, it just may catapult you into a position of greater responsibility.
